The Krabi fisherman who became an inspiration to millions for

helping two foreign tourists trapped in river mud says he is
deeply touched by a royal decoration awarded by
His Majesty the King.

Chat Udomchinda said on Saturday that he was immensely

grateful to the King who granted him the royal decoration
of the Direkkhunabhorn medal for his Good Samaritan act.

He said he could not hold back his tears after learning that his

name was among those of 5,184 people listed in the
Royal Gazette on Thursday to receive royal decorations on
the occasion of His Majesty's 88th birthday, which fell on Dec 5.

"I hope all people in Krabi do good things. They don't need to

do what I did. Just do it with no desire for reward and what you
do will eventually be returned to you," he said after receiving
a T-shirt for the "Bike for Dad" event at the municipal office in
 Muang district of Krabi.

The 44-year-old fisherman has been praised by people from all
corners of the country and beyond for the good deed he performed
on Oct 16. He was out fishing that day on the Krabi River when
he saw Norwegian tourist Arild Hagen and his Chinese wife
Guo Yaxiang sinking into thick river mud near the Chao Fa dam.

The couple had been taking pictures of birds and mangrove life
 before they became trapped.

A video taken by a passerby showed Mr Chat taking the couple's
camera and tripod to higher ground and then making several
attempts to pull them free before he hit on a solution.
He lay down in the mud and let the pair put their weight on him
so they could lift their legs free. He then walked back to his boat
once the tourists were safe. The clip has been viewed 1.7 million
times since it was posted on Oct 16.

Mr Chat also received the Pride of Thailand award from Tourism
and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul on Oct 20
in honour of his selfless act.
